Last night in the dimly lit basement of Bar Sundown I took out my phone, opened up the Youtube app, and toggled what had previously been an Unlisted video over to Public. Months — no, years— of hard work, deliberation and anticipation culminated in the tiniest gesture.
Tap, tap. Done.
I wrote a song called “Feeding an Army” in the midst of some mighty heartbreak back in 2019. I had the great fortune that some supremely talented human beings were willing to bring their heart, soul, willingness and creativity into a studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn one afternoon and create something far more powerful than I ever could have done alone.
Rosana Cabán, a trusted and long-term collaborator of mine brought her whole spirit to the piece with her keen ear, patience and expertise as a recording engineer, producer, mixer, (not to mention she’s an amazing percussionist)!
Violeta García with her intuition and mastery on the cello.
Matt Carroll with his sensitivity and incredible prowess on the keys.
Together we carved and shaped what I’m so happy to be releasing and sharing today: a deeply emotional song which I hope resonates with anyone who knows what it’s like to feel desperate, clinging with futility to something you already know is long gone.
I always knew this felt like a cinematic song and so there was no question about making a music video to accompany it. Again, I’m so fortunate to have connected with the amazing director and cinematographer S Tricker, who partnered with me creatively to bring an odd and strange vision to life.
I’m so pleased with the result, which would not have been possible without S and without our amazing sweet team who helped the day of shooting: Irina Makarova, Theo Backward, Danielle Schwab. Nola Sporn Smith was kind enough to meet with me and talk with me about movement before I got to the beach, and her insight and curiosity inspired and empowered me to stretch my limits and imagination once I got to the beach that day.
I can’t stress enough how cold the Atlantic Ocean is in late March…
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video and that it resonates with you. If you’d like to own a copy of the song, it’s available on Bandcamp at rooose.bandcamp.com. Soon I’ll have it up on Spotify, etc.
That’s all for now. I hope you enjoy the video and please let me know what you think!
Thanks for reading, watching, listening.
Love,
Rose
